Geophysics: a well kept secret
Saturday November 16, 2024 10:00am - 11:00am GMT
Geophysics is shortlisted by the UK Government as a profession in high demand, yet not known amongst physics teachers. This session explains what geophysics is: the application of physics to study planet Earth, addressing volcanism, earthquakes, resources, space weather, climate and environmental challenges; and why Geophysics matters for a sustainable future.

Supporting SEND pupils with science
Saturday November 16, 2024 10:00am - 11:00am GMT
SEND Learners - tweaking practice to meet their needs.
There’s a lot of misconceptions around teaching learners with special educational needs. Different schools expect to see different things, sometimes things that don’t help the learners or the teacher! This (research informed) workshop aims to give you a range of strategies that you can apply to your own teaching to improve your practice and make your lessons more accessible (and keep your workload down).

SEND Science - Why?
Saturday November 16, 2024 11:30am - 12:30pm GMT
We teach from a young age to do. We teach them to shower, to wash their hand and to eat their dinner. Can we use science to support the understanding of why for students with SEND?

Tackling misconceptions at KS2-3 using the BEST approach
Saturday November 16, 2024 11:30am - 12:30pm GMT
What’s the BEST way to tackle common misconceptions in science? This session explores the free resources from the Best Evidence Science Teaching (BEST) project, developed from research evidence by experts at the University of York Science Education Group (UYSEG) and the Centre for Industry Education Collaboration (CIEC). The BEST resources provide diagnostic questions and follow-up activities that target common misconceptions in KS2 and KS3 science topics, to help teachers embed effective formative assessment in lessons, challenge misconceptions, develop understanding of key science ideas, and improve the transition from primary to secondary science.

Keynote: Why geophysics should be in the syllabus
Saturday November 16, 2024 1:30pm - 2:00pm GMT
Science teachers and A level students are aware that our planet faces many problems, however, they often do not know that the discipline of Geophysics is well placed offering the appropriate, quantative skill set to study and understand our planet. Geophysicists will be needed more than ever to help tackle our society's most pressing challenges, including the energy transition towards a low-carbon future, ensuring global food and water security, and providing solutions to natural hazards such as earthquakes, volcanism, space weather and climate change.

Teaching KS1-4 science with support from Oak National Academy
Saturday November 16, 2024 2:00pm - 3:00pm GMT
We are delighted to share the new science curriculum from Oak National Academy, developed by the Centre for Industry Education Collaboration (CIEC) and University of York Science Education Group (UYSEG). Oak’s new science curriculum covers the national curriculum with a full set of lessons developed from research evidence by experienced teachers and experts at the University of York. Teachers can access adaptable, sequenced resources that provide high-quality starting points for planning lessons to target common misconceptions and enhance pupils’ substantive and disciplinary knowledge, vocabulary, practical skills, mathematical proficiencies and understanding of scientific practices, whilst embracing diversity as a fundamental principle.
